We had to work as a team, and he needed to let us know if he wasn’t ready – or if he accidentally started the stopwatch early and we needed to wait! It all started out rough, but by the end of our testing, he was doing a bang-up job.

It was a good job for him – the kid is good at technical tasks (like starting, stopping, resetting the stopwatch) but communication is a bit more of a challenge for him. I’m going to write a little about working with the kids. The test setup Sonic anemometer mounted on paint can lid Bottom side of lid Holes being added to paint can After each test we enlarged / added more holes to the bottom of the paint can. The Nu-Rail will accommodate up to a 1' outside pipe diameter. We used a stopwatch to time how long it took for the water to run out and monitored the anemometer’s ping times. The sonic anemometer is mounted to the top of the CM6/CM10 tripod (or any vertical 3/4' diameter US bore pipe) with a 3/4' by 3/4' Nu-Rail (P/N 1017), the Nu-Rail is included with the CSAT3. Next, we drilled a small hole in the bottom of the can and filled the can with a known volume of water. We grabbed an empty paint can and mounted the anemometer to the lid. Rather, my kids (6M, 4F) and I ran the test. I ran an experiment to see how sensitive the instrument is. Sonic anemometers work on the principle that the travel time of sound waves through air is affected by the wind speed component parallel with the direction of travel. Connect the TRIG pin to Arduino pin 2 and the ECHO pin to Arduino pin 3. The Sonic Anemometer/Thermometer is comprised of a probe array (containing all electronics necessary for operation), and a mounting bar. Note that this is only tested on the Arduino Uno. The Sonic Anemometer/Thermometer is a solid-state ultrasonic instrument capable of measuring wind velocities in three orthogonal axes (U, V, and W) and provides sonic temperature. It’s accuracy is sub-microsecond (which is better than the built-in micros() function Arduino carries).

I wrote a bit of Arduino code for the test. This SOP describes the basic working principle of the Campbell Scientific CSAT3 three dimensional sonic anemometer used for wind speed and air temperature.
